If you’re experiencing tight muscles, stiffness, soreness, or limited mobility, decompression cupping therapy may be a helpful addition to your treatment.

At Refresh Massage Therapy in Mississauga, decompression cupping may be incorporated into a treatment when appropriate for the client’s needs and health history.

What’s Is Decompression Cupping?

Decompression cupping is a technique that uses specialized cups to create negative pressure (suction) on the skin.

Unlike traditional massage techniques that apply pressure downward into the muscles, cupping gently lifts the skin and superficial tissues.

Depending on your treatment, the practitioner may leave the cups in one position or move them over an area of the body.

Cupping is commonly used for areas such as the back, shoulders, neck, legs, and other areas of muscular tension.

What Can Decompression Cupping Help With?

People may choose cupping as part of their treatment for:

  • Muscle tightness and tension

  • Soreness and discomfort

  • Stiffness

  • Reduced range of motion

  • Recovery after physical activity

  • Relaxation

Some research suggests cupping may help with certain types of pain, but research is still developing and results vary between individuals.

Cupping should not be considered a cure for a medical condition.

Why Do You Get Red or Purple Marks After Cupping?

After cupping, you may notice round pink, red, or purple marks where the cups were placed.

This is a common response to the suction created by the cups. The negative pressure affects small blood vessels underneath the skin and can temporarily change the colour of the treated area.

The colour may be different from one area to another.

Darker marks do not mean that more toxins were removed from your body.

The marks are generally temporary and commonly fade gradually over several days. In some people, they may remain visible for one to two weeks.

What Should You Do Before Your Cupping Appointment?

Before treatment, please tell your practitioner about your health history and any concerns you may have.

It is particularly important to let your practitioner know if you:

  • Are pregnant

  • Take blood-thinning medication

  • Have a bleeding or clotting disorder

  • Have sensitive or damaged skin

  • Have an active skin infection

  • Have recently had surgery or an injury

  • Have another medical condition that could affect treatment

Your practitioner will assess whether decompression cupping is appropriate for you.

What Should You Do After Cupping?

Temporary marks or mild tenderness can occur following treatment.

After your appointment:

Keep the treated skin clean and avoid scratching or irritating the area. Stay normally hydrated and follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner.

If you experience an unusual reaction such as significant pain, blistering, increasing redness, swelling, or signs of infection, seek appropriate medical advice.

Who Should Avoid Cupping?

Cupping isn’t appropriate for everyone.

Pregnancy requires special consideration, and clients who are pregnant should always tell their practitioner before treatment.

Cupping should generally not be performed directly over open wounds, active skin infections, significantly inflamed skin, or certain injured areas.

People taking blood-thinning medications or who have certain bleeding, clotting, skin, or cardiovascular conditions should discuss this with their practitioner before receiving cupping.

Your practitioner will review your health history and determine whether the treatment is appropriate.

Can Insurance Cover Cupping?

This is an important question.

Cupping itself should not be advertised as automatically covered by insurance. Coverage depends on the treatment being provided, the practitioner’s professional registration, and the client’s individual insurance plan.

When an appropriately registered healthcare professional uses cupping as a modality within their authorized treatment, such as Massage Therapy or acupuncture, the professional service may be eligible for reimbursement under the client’s extended health benefits.

Every insurance plan is different, so clients should confirm their coverage directly with their insurance provider.

Refresh Massage Therapy does not guarantee insurance reimbursement.
